Dartmouth Ice Festival 2025

It was a cold day in downtown Dartmouth today, which was probably just as well for the 2025 edition of the Dartmouth Ice Festival underway on Portland Street and outside the Alderney Ferry Terminal from January 31st to February 2nd. I've gone down the last two years to try my hand at capturing some of the ice sculptures.

The black & white medium seemed to suit most of these images - I needed to boost the contrast to bring out the features of most of the ice sculpture - although I did process a few in colour.

This bear sculpture is wearing a blanket of light snow from earlier in the day.

Every time I look at this particular sculpture I can't help but think that ET is making a rude gesture at the record store in the background.

I was fortunate to time this image with the passage of a child in a colourful winter jacket behind the sculpture.

There were several bears.

The lights in the business establishment behind this sculpture added some yellow light to the mix so I kept this one in colour.

Alleyway horse.

Peace sign.

This particular sculpture provided the novel opportunity of capturing the sculptor himself working away behind the block of ice.

Ultimately, I hope my photographs do justice to the various sculptures that I captured, and many thanks to the sculptors themselves for providing the subject matter! The images can also be found in a gallery on my Smugmug site here

Nocturne 2017

Nocturne is an annual art festival that takes place on an evening in October, with various pieces of static or performance art scattered around both Dartmouth and Halifax. I went over to take some photos, as I have for the last few years. As always, I only managed to take in a small portion of the various pieces throughout the city.

Nature wasn't about to be outdone, and put on this sunset show which we caught from the ferry.

Not part of the festival, but the Alexander took on a golden hue while under construction.

"To Air is Human" consisted of pieces of white cloth hung around the boardwalk by Sands at Salter.

Chris Titus blowing glass at the Garrison Brewery.

The Halifax Circus put on a fire show next to the United Church on Barrington Street.

"Sky,Pink,Blue" involved a fog machine and some lighting set up in the Public Gardens. The fog was coloured, but I converted this to black and white.

"Red Green Blue", another piece in the Public Gardens.

"Night nigh lightbulb" at the band stand in the Public Gardens.

"Trophy", at the Alderney Ferry Terminal.

Preview of Tall Ships 2017

Timed with Canada's 150th year, the 2017 Tall Ships Regatta has seen increased traffic of large sailing vessels in Halifax. The main festival in Halifax will occur between July 29 and August 1st.

The first of the season to visit was Italy's Amerigo Vespucci, which put in at Pier 20.

Next came Wylde Swan around June 15.

On June 27th, The Chilean Navy's sail training vessel Esmeralda arrived, and initially went to anchor across from HMC Dockyard.

On Thursday Esmeralda moved to Pier 20, and was open for tours on Friday, at which time I took the kids over for a look.

I look forward to seeing more classic sailing vessels visit Halifax over the next month or so.
